4 Steps to Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

“Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. ~Matthew 14:29

Doing something new can be scary. But that shouldn’t stop us from following the plans God has for our lives. In previous blogs, I’ve described the steps to finding, following and fulfilling your purpose. As much as you want to do so, you can find yourself paralyzed by the fear of leaving your comfort zone.

That doesn’t have to be the case. If you let Him, God will interrupt your state of comfortable uncomfortableness and move you into a place of purposed pursuits to accomplish His will.

If you’re honest with yourself, your comfort zone isn’t really that comfortable. You know that there’s more inside you, there’s more to give, and more to explore. Inside you feel as if you’re a caged bird that wants to break free. Well it’s time to spread your wings.

In the above scripture, Peter is confronted by Jesus and challenged to step out of his comfort zone in faith. It sounds easy to do when you read the verse. Ask Jesus if it’s Him, then step…but in real life, this can be very intimidating.

I was challenged to step out in faith when my wife and I moved from Dallas to California. We didn’t know anyone, had not jobs lined up, no money saved up, and our house was yet to be sold. Nevertheless, I knew Jesus was saying “Come.”

Here are 4 things I did to make that move:

Pray. Like Peter in the story above, you must first be sure that it’s your divine calling you’re following. This can only be done through sincere prayer. You can have others pray with you for confirmation, but make sure you’re not letting the naysayers in on this one. You need true blue prayer warriors that want the best for you. Otherwise, you will have people praying for you to stay.
Focus. I use this in a lot of my posts because it is so vital and important. What is it that you’ve been called to do. Focus on that calling. All Jesus asked Peter to do above was “come.” Peter didn’t have to do much else. It’s when Peter lost this focus that he began to sink under the weight of his choice to move.
Step. This means you’ve got to take some action. It goes without saying, but in order to “step” out of your comfort zone, you must “step”. So after you’ve focused on what God is calling you to do, what is one step you can take in that direction? Yes, ONE STEP! You don’t have to have everything figured out. Just take the step, then repeat. Before you know it, you’ll be well out of your comfort zone and in the complete will of God.
Celebrate. Once you’ve made strides in the direction of your calling. Make sure you’re taking the time to celebrate significant milestones. This helps you to keep enough momentum to keep moving forward. Just remember, you don’t have to break the bank to celebrate. A small reward or pat on the back goes a long way.
